When Ági Veres returns home from Germany for Mother’s Day, she and her mother Magdi will have a lot to catch up on. How are the children in the oncology ward at Madarász Children’s Hospital?, where the duo has entertained on a weekly basis for more than four years.
Ági, 25, is studying Arts Therapy for Children at the Katholische Stiftungsfachhochschule München University in Munich. She has plenty of life experience to bring to her university program. The Veres mother and daughter team have played guitar, sang songs, made handicrafts, laughed, cried, and comforted more than 5,000 children, their families, and medical teams at hospitals in Budapest, as artists for the Smiling Hospital Foundation. |

"I am such a proud mother, when I see Ági’s eyes sparkling, as she sings to children, bringing smiles to their faces, helping them forget that they are in the hospital," said Magdi, 52. "We do this work from the heart, and it is such a blessing to do it with my daughter."
Since 2004, the Smiling Hospital Foundation has been sending musicians, puppeteers and artists into children’s wards in Hungary. SHF works in 15 counties and 18 hospitals. Proudly financially transparent, the SHF lists all finances on the website.
Magdi continues to work with the children while Ági is away; Ági will rejoin when her school finishes. The mother-daughter team works amid cancer, death, and circumstances far beyond the years of the youngsters with whom they work. Through their work, they remain strong and cheerful so that the children can, at least for a while, forget their circumstances. |

Dr. Gergely Kriván from the Szent László Hospital has seen, first hand, that ‘Happiness helps healing’.
"Healing does not end with pure science and medical attention," said Dr. Kriván. "Levity and laughter as part of a child’s day in the hospital does wonders for the soul. That’s why the Smiling Hospital Foundation is such a vital and important program." |
